Sometimes, we don't end up where we planned to go on a trip. Ready to take an unexpected turn, Megadue proudly presents I Was Flying Back to You When the Ceiling Collapsed a solo exhibition by Martina Rota. Rota develops a hybrid setup that combines installation and performative elements for this occasion. The exhibit explores how a forced hijack can create possibilities to escape from difficult situations.
The artist intervenes in the space by opening passages and adding safety equipment. The glass door is cut with a circular opening connecting the inside and outside. The floor is painted bright yellow. In addition, there's an emergency ladder hanging in the middle, which looks like it's coming down from the sky. The minimal nature of the exhibition space in Via Mascarella is stimulated with pushes towards the walls, against the ground, and the ceiling.
Rota's work is related to the performing body. But in Megadue, this connection takes on a new dimension, partly embodied by a child angel who, on April 5th, uses the ladder to sway and sing the nursery rhyme previously written on the ceiling. Personal experiences resonate with collective and unknown bodies, creating a post-traumatic aesthetic.
